Perception of movement of body parts, closely related to proprioception and sensory input from muscles and joints.
Physiology
Mechanism and function
It helps estimate movement direction and extent without continuous visual guidance. Proprioception also includes position sense; the terms are not always interchangeable.
Assessment and clinical implications
Repositioning or movement-detection tasks may assess it. Results also depend on attention, pain and the testing protocol.
Points to consider
Movement integrates sensory input, spinal circuits and central commands. Balance and coordination also depend on vision, vestibular function and attention. Difficulty with one task therefore cannot isolate a single mechanism without assessment.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Mechanoreception — Detection of mechanical stimuli such as pressure, stretch or vibration by receptors that convert them into neural signals.
- Muscle tone — Baseline muscle tension and resistance during passive movement, influenced by neural and tissue factors.
- Golgi tendon organ — Sensory receptor at the muscle–tendon junction providing information related to tension in the musculotendinous unit.
Conceptual guide: Kinesthesia. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
