Baseline muscle tension and resistance during passive movement, influenced by neural and tissue factors.
Physiology
Mechanism and function
Tone is neither maximal strength nor a direct measure of psychological relaxation. Increased tone has several possible causes; spasticity is a specific form related to neurological injury.
Assessment and clinical implications
Examination considers movement speed, distribution, pain and reflexes. Feeling a tight muscle does not establish spasticity or spinal cord injury.
Points to consider
Movement integrates sensory input, spinal circuits and central commands. Balance and coordination also depend on vision, vestibular function and attention. Difficulty with one task therefore cannot isolate a single mechanism without assessment.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Kinesthesia — Perception of movement of body parts, closely related to proprioception and sensory input from muscles and joints.
- Postural control — Sensory and motor mechanisms that maintain balance and adapt body orientation to a task.
- Mechanoreception — Detection of mechanical stimuli such as pressure, stretch or vibration by receptors that convert them into neural signals.
Conceptual guide: Muscle tone. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
