Physiology
Mechanism and function
Facet orientation, discs and the rib cage influence its distribution. Overall trunk rotation often combines spinal, pelvic and hip motion.
Assessment and clinical implications
Pain with rotation does not identify one specific structure. After cervical trauma, investigation for injury should precede forced maneuvers.
Points to consider
Spinal movement is distributed across segments and coordinated with the pelvis and limbs. A single measurement does not define ideal posture or instability. Range, load, speed and tolerance should be considered together.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Spinal extension — Backward bending of the spine involving joints, discs and muscular control across several segments.
- Spinal lateral flexion — Movement in which the spine bends to one side, often accompanied by rotation and pelvic adjustments.
- Spinal flexion — Forward bending of the spine distributed across several segments and often combined with pelvic and hip movement.
Conceptual guide: Spinal rotation. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
