Physiology
Mechanism and function
The relationship between side bending and rotation depends on region, position and individual. It does not follow one rule applicable to every clinical situation.
Assessment and clinical implications
Asymmetry may reflect pain, stiffness or normal variation. It becomes relevant when consistent with symptoms and functional limitations.
Points to consider
Spinal movement is distributed across segments and coordinated with the pelvis and limbs. A single measurement does not define ideal posture or instability. Range, load, speed and tolerance should be considered together.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Spinal rotation — Movement around the spine’s longitudinal axis, with range varying considerably between cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions.
- Spinal shear loading — Loading component tending to make one part of the spine slide parallel to another, distinct from pure compression.
- Spinal extension — Backward bending of the spine involving joints, discs and muscular control across several segments.
Conceptual guide: Spinal lateral flexion. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
