Physiology
Mechanism and function
Discs, facets, ligaments and muscles contribute. Loads vary with posture, speed and carried weight; flexion is not inherently pathological.
Assessment and clinical implications
Pain during flexion provides functional information but does not diagnose a disc herniation. Exercises are adapted to symptoms and progress rather than universally prohibited.
Points to consider
Spinal movement is distributed across segments and coordinated with the pelvis and limbs. A single measurement does not define ideal posture or instability. Range, load, speed and tolerance should be considered together.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Spinal motion segment — Functional unit comprising two adjacent vertebrae, their disc, joints and associated ligamentous structures.
- Spinal extension — Backward bending of the spine involving joints, discs and muscular control across several segments.
- Spinal rotation — Movement around the spine’s longitudinal axis, with range varying considerably between cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions.
Conceptual guide: Spinal flexion. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
