Physiology
Mechanism and function
Distribution varies with task, speed and individual capacity. There is no single normal ratio for everyone, and an observed difference does not establish disease.
Assessment and clinical implications
Assessment may guide learning of a more tolerable or efficient movement. Follow-up should evaluate real activities and symptoms rather than only reproducing a theoretical posture.
Points to consider
Spinal movement is distributed across segments and coordinated with the pelvis and limbs. A single measurement does not define ideal posture or instability. Range, load, speed and tolerance should be considered together.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Spinal shear loading — Loading component tending to make one part of the spine slide parallel to another, distinct from pure compression.
- Spinal lateral flexion — Movement in which the spine bends to one side, often accompanied by rotation and pelvic adjustments.
- Spinal rotation — Movement around the spine’s longitudinal axis, with range varying considerably between cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions.
Conceptual guide: Lumbopelvic rhythm. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
