Number of standard deviations separating measured bone density from an expected mean for a comparable population, particularly by age and sex.
Radiology
Principle and interpretation
It is generally preferred before menopause and in men younger than 50. A Z-score of −2.0 or lower is described as below the expected range for age.
Indications, limitations and precautions
A low score may prompt investigation for secondary causes. It does not by itself establish every osteoporosis diagnosis, particularly in younger adults; clinical context and fractures are essential.
Points to consider
Fracture risk is not captured by density alone. Age, previous fractures, medications and fall risk also matter. Degenerative changes can distort lumbar measurements; technical quality and the selected measurement sites should be checked.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
