Radiology

Principle and interpretation

In postmenopausal women and men aged 50 or older, a T-score of −2.5 or lower at a validated site can establish densitometric osteoporosis. This threshold does not apply identically at every age.

Indications, limitations and precautions

Fractures, risk factors and measurement quality complete interpretation. Arthritis or vertebral fracture can affect lumbar measurements; the score alone is not an individual’s fracture risk.

Points to consider

Fracture risk is not captured by density alone. Age, previous fractures, medications and fall risk also matter. Degenerative changes can distort lumbar measurements; technical quality and the selected measurement sites should be checked.

Role of TAGMED care

At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.

Related concepts and distinctions

These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.

  • Bone density Z-score — Number of standard deviations separating measured bone density from an expected mean for a comparable population, particularly by age and sex.
Understanding the concept
01Valid DXA measurement
02Reference population
03T-score or Z-score
04Overall fracture risk
