Anatomy
Organization and role
It is often described around T12–L1, with boundaries varying by clinical context. The rib cage and lumbar segments impose different constraints and movement ranges.
Clinical relevance and investigation
This transition matters in fracture assessment. Pain after a fall, particularly with osteoporosis, should be evaluated before exercises or manipulation loading the region.
Points to consider
Bony landmarks identify a level, region or anatomical passage. Shape variation is not necessarily pathological. Reports describe location, relationships to adjacent structures and, when relevant, implications for a specialist procedure.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Craniocervical junction — Transition region between the skull base, atlas and axis, containing essential joints, ligaments and neurological and vascular structures.
- Lumbosacral junction — Transition between the mobile lumbar spine and sacrum, including the L5–S1 segment and its supporting structures.
- Transverse foramen — Opening in a cervical vertebra’s transverse process transmitting vascular structures depending on the level and anatomical variation.
Conceptual guide: Thoracolumbar junction. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
