Spinal cord damage caused by trauma that may disrupt motor, sensory and autonomic function below the injured level.
Pathology
Mechanism and manifestations
Presentation depends on level and completeness. Weakness, sensory loss, respiratory or sphincter problems may occur; vertebral fracture and cord injury are distinct diagnoses that may coexist.
Diagnosis and management
This is an emergency requiring spinal precautions, neurological assessment and imaging. Hospital treatment aims to limit secondary injury and address compression or instability; rehabilitation and complication prevention follow. TAGMED care does not replace this specialist pathway.
Points to consider
After trauma, pain intensity and injury severity are not always proportional. Mechanism, level, neurological status and stability guide care. New weakness, sensory loss, breathing difficulty or impaired walking requires urgent assessment.
Role of TAGMED care
With acute symptoms, urgent hospital assessment takes priority. This condition first requires medical diagnosis and, depending on the situation, specialist management. TAGMED services do not replace treatment of infection or tumor, stabilization of an unstable injury, or neurological or vascular treatment. Any conservative support should be considered only after diagnosis, restrictions and the treating team’s recommendations have been clarified.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Whiplash injury — Acceleration-deceleration mechanism affecting the neck that may cause associated symptoms without identifying one specific anatomical injury.
- Cervical sprain — Injury to neck ligaments or a joint capsule when mechanical tolerance is exceeded, with variable severity.
- Cervical facet dislocation — Loss of normal alignment at one or both cervical facet joints, usually traumatic and often associated with substantial instability.
Conceptual guide: Traumatic spinal cord injury. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
