Blood supply to the spinal cord that delivers oxygen and nutrients and removes metabolic by-products.
Physiology
Mechanism and function
Perfusion depends on arteries, venous drainage and surrounding pressures. Severe or prolonged reduction may damage tissue even without a herniated disc.
Assessment and clinical implications
Sudden neurological impairment requires urgent assessment. Blood-pressure targets after spinal cord trauma belong to hospital care and should not be extrapolated to self-treatment.
Points to consider
Cerebrospinal fluid and blood circulation are distinct, although both support nervous-system function. Pressure, flow and composition are not interchangeable. Investigation belongs within a medical assessment tailored to the clinical question.
Role of TAGMED care
At TAGMED, assessment aims to understand symptoms, history and functional limitations. Manual care and osteopathy, motorized spinal decompression, laser and shockwave have different indications. The term described in this entry is not enough to select any of these modalities. Their relevance, limitations and possible contraindications should be discussed in relation to diagnosis and individual goals.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Cerebrospinal fluid circulation — Production, movement and clearance of cerebrospinal fluid between the ventricles and spaces around the brain and spinal cord.
- Cerebrospinal fluid — Clear fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord in the subarachnoid spaces and present within the brain’s ventricles.
Conceptual guide: Spinal cord perfusion. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
