Plasma-cell cancer that can weaken vertebrae through bone lesions and cause pain, fractures or neurological compression.
Pathology
Mechanism and manifestations
Fatigue, anemia, kidney impairment or hypercalcemia can accompany bone pain. A vertebral fracture is not always osteoporotic; context guides differential assessment.
Diagnosis and management
Diagnosis requires hematological evaluation with laboratory tests, marrow assessment and imaging. Systemic and bone-directed treatments are specialized; radiotherapy or stabilization addresses selected complications. New deficit or sphincter symptoms require urgent assessment for compression.
Points to consider
Benign and malignant describe biological behavior, but a benign lesion can still compress neural tissue or weaken bone. Precise diagnosis depends on context, imaging and sometimes tissue analysis. Progressive pain with weakness or sphincter changes requires prompt assessment.
Role of TAGMED care
This condition first requires medical diagnosis and, depending on the situation, specialist management. TAGMED services do not replace treatment of infection or tumor, stabilization of an unstable injury, or neurological or vascular treatment. Any conservative support should be considered only after diagnosis, restrictions and the treating team’s recommendations have been clarified.
Related concepts and distinctions
These concepts belong to the same field, but are not synonyms.
- Vertebral plasmacytoma — Localized plasma-cell tumor affecting a vertebra, requiring assessment to distinguish it from multiple myeloma.
- Spinal cord astrocytoma — Glial tumor arising within the spinal cord from astrocytic-lineage cells, with variable grade.
- Spinal osteoblastoma — Usually benign bone-forming tumor that can affect the spine and behave locally aggressively.
Conceptual guide: Multiple myeloma involving the spine. Blocks summarize useful relationships; they are not an individual anatomical image.
